A Touch of Byzantine Art Finds Its Way to Greenlawn

George Flippakis is the artist who specializes in Byzantine iconography, that is working on a mural in his studio in Woodbury. The painting will eventually cover the interior of the 72-foot diameter dome of the St Paraskevi Greek Orthodox Chruch, in Greenlawn.
"To commemorate the congregation's 45th anniversary, and the 25th anniverasry of the consecration of the Greenlawn church, St Paraskevi officials have commissioned what they say is the first Byzantine mural to depict the Seven Days of Creation and the Preparation of the Throne of Christ in one continuous scene in a church in the United States. The mural, which will be painted over the interior of the church's 72 foot diamter celing dome, is being created by George Filippakis of Woodbury, an artist who specializes in Byzantine iconography. It is scheduled to be unveiled on July 14."
